EL KOBO FARM

Minimum: four individuals.

Tour covers land transport, lodging, sea kayak, mountain bike, and three daily meals, travel insurance, and the services of an expert local guide.

Day 1

Departure at noon from San José, crossing high mountain terrain and extensive plain lands to La Palma in Puerto Jiménez harbor, for dinner and lodging.

Day 2

After breakfast, visitors ride a 4x4 vehicle along a dirt and stone road, crossing bridges over rivers and passing by tropical hardwood tree and oil palm plantations. A half hour later we arrive at the renowned eco-tourist farm El Kobo, whose name in the Guaymí Indian dialect means “dreams.”

From the farm we go into the forest, where the local guide helps visitors examine and learn all about wild medicinal plants. We visit the farm’s orchards and sample fresh fruit, and at its cacao plantation witness the whole process of making chocolate, which is demonstrated step by step: from picking the fruit from the tree, drying it, extracting and grinding the cacao seeds, to finally preparing and serving aromatic hot chocolate.

Snacks made with different kinds of fruit are also offered, such as banana bread; everything is produced here without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. The entire farm tour lasts three hours, after which we return to Puerto Jiménez harbor for a traditional supper, with lodging at Bosque Mar Cabins.

Day 3

Following a hearty breakfast, we begin our bicycle journey over rolling flat land, crossing suspended bridges and passing by exotic tree plantations where flocks of tropical and migratory birds roost and feed.

After the pleasant seven-kilometer bike trip over to Sandal Beach for a snack break, we continue our trip in sea kayaks on the calm ocean waters of the Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf), past mangrove jungles; a brief explanation about their importance to the region’s ecology is provided.

Visitors view shallow coral reefs and watch dolphins at sunset. Approximately 8 hours have passed, and we return to the Bosque Mar Cabins for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4

We make an early return trip to San José, passing through mountainous areas and lovely rolling countryside.
